Many thanks to The Canal and River Trust for facilitating this camera's location and capitally funding its installation. Lincombe Lock, the highest lock on the Severn River, is located approximately one and a half miles downstream from Stourport. It is situated in an artificial channel, alongside a weir. During the construction process, the original embankment that closed off the old channel was washed away by floodwater. To remedy this, eight barges were loaded with stones and deliberately sunk, with their pointing direction being upstream, in order to serve as a foundation and fill the breach. At the time when regular trips were being made from Avonmouth, the water level on the lock sill was the shallowest encountered by oil tankers en route to Stourport. The lock keeper would communicate this depth to the port each morning, which determined the quantity of oil that could be loaded, with a tolerance of one inch allowed.Between Stourport and Gloucester, there are a total of six sets of locks on the Severn River. These locks include Lincombe, Holt Fleet, Bevere Diglis, Tewkesbury, and Gloucester. Additionally, the Stourport Canal Basins comprise five historically significant basins, accommodating nearly 100 narrow boats and yachts. There is also one reopened basin, along with six canal locks and a dry lock. All of these are situated on the banks of the River Severn within the picturesque Severn Valley.Stourport owes its existence to the pivotal canal network. The town flourished around the crucial transhipment port, where goods were transferred from the River Severn to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal for transportation to the industrial cities of the Midlands during the 18th and 19th centuries.Today, Stourport serves as a beloved destination, with its vibrant canal, basins, and the scenic River Severn at its core. Visitors can leisurely stroll along the picturesque riverfront, admiring the town's exquisite Georgian architecture. They can also relish a delightful picnic in one of the waterside meadows or embark on a pleasurable boat cruise along the canal or river. A diverse range of activities throughout the year ensures there is something for every member of the family, contributing to the town's lively and dynamic atmosphere.
